As expected, it was PK that continued to rule the box office in the second week as well. Though after a terrific weekend (followed by Christmas holiday) the signs were clear that the Rajkumar Hirani film would enjoy a good run for itself, the way PK stayed consistent in the second week as well speaks volumes of how it has been accepted by the audience.
Yes, the theme was a tad controversial but that didn’t impact the footfalls adversely. As a result, over 90 crore came in the second week as well, which is huge indeed for Aamir Khan and Anushka Sharma.
The film now stands at around 275 crores which is just fantabulous. Dhoom 3 holds the record for being the highest grosser ever at 280 crore and that record would be broken by PK inside the third weekend itself. Also, 300 crore would be achieved in three weeks flat, hence resulting in some smiles at least for Bollywood which hadn’t been too impressive in 2014.
With such great numbers, the bar has been set higher up by Rajkumar Hirani, Aamir Khan and Vidhu Vinod Chopra. No wonder, the next time when the trio comes together (which should take a couple of years at least), 500 crore would be the big milestone!
Meanwhile, Ugly got all the critical appreciation but poor numbers. With collections staying low, there isn’t much that has come from way of footfalls. The film has been hit big time by poor release date and ad-hoc marketing and promotion, which could have been much better thought of. Anurag Kashyap and his team of fantastic actors and crew deserved better!
